Natural Skincare Regimen for Oily Skin

Skincare Remedies You Can Find in Your Kitchen

Do you struggle with trying to keep your oily skin under control? If your face looks shinier than ever, maybe you are overdoing your skincare regimen in an attempt to dry up the grease. Switching to a gentle, natural routine might be more beneficial in the long run. The last thing you want to do is dry out your face - it will only cause your skin to produce more oil.

Cleanse: Try washing with a natural oil

Washing your face with oil seems like it would do just the opposite of what you want. Oil cleansing is a method of breaking down oil with natural oils to achieve perfectly balanced skin. Read this post on oil cleansing to learn more. On days that you use the oil cleansing method, there is no need to scrub, tone, or hydrate. Another option is to simply use an oil (coconut, for example) as you would a normal cleanser.

Scrub: Mix up a honey and sugar scrub

Mix honey and sugar together to create a scrub in your desired consistency; rub it onto your skin in a circular motion, then rinse. Honey will keep your face from drying out while the sugar exfoliates to remove loose skin cells to prevent clogged pores. Clogged pores cause breakouts, after all - especially with skin that is naturally oily.

Tone: Try a gentle, homemade astringent

Make your own gentle facial toner using ingredients found in your kitchen. Brew a cup of tea and let a packet of green tea steep for about five minutes. Let the tea cool, then apply it to your face with a cotton pad and let dry. Or, mix one part apple cider vinegar with two parts distilled or filtered water. You may need to experiment with the recipe to find what works for you. Let dry and moisturize.

Hydrate: Use a natural moisturizer

Even if you have naturally oily skin, it's a good idea to keep it hydrated; attempting to dry out skin will actually have the reverse effect, and you will produce excess oil to compensate. A small amount of a natural oil will keep your face moisturized. Experiment to find out which type works best for you; I tried coconut oil and found that, even after a couple months, my face felt greasy while using it. Not every product works for everyone, so play around to find what works for you.

Top 10 Ways to Use Coconut Oil as a Beauty Product

You might already use coconut oil as a healthy fat in your cooking--but did you know it also has many uses as a natural beauty product? To be honest, there are way more than ten ways to use coconut oil as a beauty product. It wasn't easy, but I finally narrowed it down to the top ten.

1. Facial cleanser. I have heard many people swear by coconut oil as a cleanser and makeup remover. Simply massage it into your skin and remove with a damp washcloth. Pamper yourself further by letting it absorb for a few minutes while placing a warm, damp washcloth over your face, then remove the oil with warm water.

2. Moisturizer and body lotion. Coconut oil is a safe and effective, natural body lotion. You can use coconut oil to moisturize virtually any area of the body. I mainly use it as a facial hydrator, but you can use it on dry knees and elbows, hands...even on your lips and as an anti-wrinkle eye cream.

3. Sunscreen. Coconut oil can help filter the sun's harmful rays to keep your skin from burning. Of course, as this solid oil will melt in the sun, it can be somewhat messy to take to the beach, but it is all-natural and doesn't contain the chemicals that are in most commercial sunscreens.

4. Scalp treatment. I haven't personally tried coconut oil in my hair (yet), but in doing some research, I have found that coconut oil can be used either alone or combined with other natural products to treat a dry, itchy scalp and dandruff. Simply massage it in, allow to absorb for twenty minutes and follow up with shampoo and conditioner.

5. Frizz tamer. It can also be used to tame dry, frizzy hair. After shampooing, simply massage the coconut oil into the ends of your hair, let it absorb while you do the rest of your shower tasks and rinse well.

6. Cuticle cream. Who needs fancy cuticle creams when you have a natural alternative at home? As you are rubbing coconut oil into your hands, massage a little extra into your cuticles for pretty nails. You can do the same with your feet and the skin around your toenails.

7. Heel softener. Soften dry, cracked heels with a coconut oil treatment. Simply rub it into your feet before bedtime and put some socks on to keep the oil on your feet (and not the sheets!) then take them off in the morning for soft, summer-ready feet.

8. Deodorant. I haven't used coconut oil as a deodorant yet, but I have found several different ways to do so. The first option is to simply rub it on with your fingers. You can also make a paste using coconut oil and baking soda. Optionally, you could also add your favorite essential oil for a scented deodorant.

9. Shaving cream. Coconut oil may not lather up like commercial shaving cream, but it will soak into your skin, leaving you with smooth, soft legs. While in the shower, make sure to stay out of the stream of water while shaving and rinse the razor often.

10. Oral hygiene. You will find numerous toothpaste recipes that include coconut oil as an ingredient. Personally, I like to use coconut oil for "oil pulling", during which you swish the oil for twenty minutes then rinse with water. It has many health benefits in addition to healthy teeth, but that is an article for another time.

How do you use coconut oil in your beauty regimen?

It has a diaphoretic effect, meaning that tea tree promotes a body to sweat which enhances a body's preventative response when threatened by infection. The magical-like healing and disinfectant properties make it a sort of wonder-drug.

Aboriginal Australians have used the oil of the Melaleuca Alternifolia plant, otherwise known as tea tree oil, for hundreds of years for its potent medicinal qualities as a cure for almost all sorts of tropical infections and diseases. It is derived from the plant's sticky leaves and needles. Tea tree oil is continued to be used today in home remedies around the world as a natural remedy.

What You Should Know About Essential Oils

Basic Information and Uses to Get Starting with Essential Oils

Essential Oils have become quite trendy. You can purchase various grades of essential oils now in health food stores, grocery stores, bed and bath establishments and drug stores - not to mention online and through mail order. How can you know what to purchase or how to use the tiny vials? Here are some suggestions on how to use essential oils and what you should know before incorporating them into your personal care routine.

Essential oils are distilled from various plants. All parts of plants can be used including leaves, seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers and fruit. The plant parts are cooked down and the essential oils are the distilled result. Essential oils can be 50-100 times more potent than the plant they are derived from.

Unlike "base oils" such as olive oil, almond oil, peanut oil, etc. which feel filmy and greasy and stay on the surface of the skin, essential oils can be absorbed quickly into the skin and the essential oil can evaporate at room temperature. Within twenty minutes of applying essential oil to a person's skin, evidence of the chemicals within that oil can be found in every cell within the body. That is just one of the ways essential oils can be so powerful in fighting illness and improving the immune system.

Essential oils are used as herbal and medicinal supplements, as aromatherapy, and cosmetically and domestically for various uses. It is important to use pure "therapeutic grade" essential oils, not oils that are watered down. It can be tempting to buy the least expensive versions, but often these are not "therapeutic grade," so use a reliable source and supplier and investigate for quality. Check with a specialist at a health focused merchant or an informed medical specialist.

There are so many different essential oils, and at least as many uses. It is a good idea to do some research prior to making purchases. Good references are: Essential Oils Desk Reference, compiled by Essential Science Publishing and Encyclopedia of Essential Oils, by Julia Lawless. You can also do some investigating online or at your library for more reference materials regarding essential oils.

How can you use essential oils? Since they are so concentrated, remember to use them sparingly. Here are some beginner's ideas for using them around the house:

Cleaning:
use a few drops in your washing machine and clothes dryer for fresh smelling laundry; add a drop or two to your vacuum bag or sprinkle on carpets and vacuum to freshen the air and the floors; lemon and citrus oils can work well as a disinfectant added to warm water and used as a cleaner.

Aromatherapy: Inhale or diffuse essential oil in a spritz/spray bottle and spray into the air; a drop or two on a hand or a hanky can be inhaled; use a cold-air diffuser or a pot of steaming water to spread the aroma into the air.

Topical Use: Add a few drops to a bath; mix 12-15 drops into ¼ cup of Epsom salts for a soothing, therapeutic bath; Add to a massage oil; wear as a perfume or cologne or rub directly onto the skin.

These are just a few uses for essential oil. Essential oils can also be ingested and taken internally, but see a specialist or medical professional to obtain recommendations and information about how to safely ingest essential oils.

There are so many wonderful uses and different types of essential oils, one could spend a lifetime just investigating the variety. Just remember to find a reputable supplier and use only therapeutic grade essential oils - do some homework and try to talk with someone at your health food, health supplement or other specialty store and you'll be well on your way to discovering the world of essential oils.

The Sesame Seed

Tasty and Good for You The Sesame Seed (Sesamum indicum)

America's introduction to the sesame seed came in the form of fast food. The sesame seed bun is a staple of McDonald's and Burger King. However, the sesame seed has a long history of use going back to ancient times - -3000 BC. History tells us that the sesame seed is the first recorded seasoning. In the Middle East, in the early civilization of Assyria, sesame oil was born. It was probably the first vegetable oil-well ahead of olive oil. It is known that the Egyptians ground sesame seeds to make flour. The Romans used the sesame seed in making bread. The Chinese have been using the sesame seed for thousands of years.

Sesame plants can be found in Asia, North Africa, Central America, China, India, Japan, Mexico, and the United States. The seed arrived in the U.S. when African slaves carried them here. Sesame seeds are produced in relatively hot and dry regions because the plants are adaptable and drought resistant. The sesame seed is full of nutrition and contain no cholesterol. Sesame seeds contain high quantities of methionine and tryptophan, which are amino acids missing from other vegetable protein sources that are important for healthy liver and kidneys and the utilization of B-complex vitamins.

Sesame seeds, also known as benni-seed, sim sim and til, are used by people around the world in many ways. Cooking oil, which is extracted from sesame seeds is the seed's main use, especially in Asia. In North American and Europe, raw sesame seeds are mostly used as a topping on breads such as hamburger buns, bagels, bread sticks, and the like. Middle Eastern countries use sesame seeds for tahini paste, halvah, and oil.

Sesame oil comes in two basic types. One is light in color and flavor and has a delicious nutty suggestion. The darker, Asian sesame oil has a much stronger flavor and fragrance and is used as a flavor accent for some Asian dishes. Sesame oil is high in polyunsaturated fats ranking fourth behind safflower, soybean, and corn oil. The average smokepoint for sesame oil is 420 degrees Fahrenheit, which makes it excellent for frying.

Sesame seeds come in black, white, brown, and red. Here in the United States, we use more white seeds than black, mostly in bread and bread products. In Asian countries, the opposite is true. The main use of black sesame seed is to encrust fish or meat dishes. This serves many purposes; it flavors the meat or fish with a pleasant nuttiness, and also helps to seal in the juices during cooking. Black sesame seeds are also tossed into stir-fry and used as seasoning in rice, vegetables, and salads.

You can purchase sesame seeds packaged in a grocery store or in bulk at a middle-eastern grocer or health food store. They should be stored in an airtight container and will last up to 6 months in a refrigerator and a full year if frozen.

Rosemary Essential Oils for Your Skin and Hair

Using Rosemary to Improve Your Hair and Skin's Health and Natural Beauty!

Rosemary has always been used in food and cosmetics since countless generations ago. The reasons are pretty obvious, it's a healthy seasoning and food in of itself, and it's got many properties that are incredibly beneficial to the health of your skin as well as your body! Rosemary is widely available as well, as it grows in a variety of climates and survives droughts and extreme temperatures to a degree other herbal plants cannot even touch. Even novice growers and gardeners can have fresh healthy rosemary growing nearby, it's not a favorite of many insects so upkeep of this plant is relatively low. Many skin and hair care products you can buy today feature rosemary extracts and oils, and charge well enough for them. You can harness the amazing natural properties of rosemary in your own home, and get that movie star skin without having to go broke for it!

To get essential oils and essences of rosemary, you can look at a local specialty shop, organic and rare food markets like Wholefoods, or try searching online for a distributor that sells in smaller quantities for private use and not for restaurants. With just a small amount of rosemary oil (I mean small, even a few drops!), you can see a difference in your skin and hair.

Starting with your hair and working your way down to your face, you can use a bit of this essential oil to pamper your hair and skin and feel like you spent a day at the spa. With a soft bristled comb like one you use for your eyebrows and eyelashes, a few drops of rosemary oil, and about a half hour's time, your hair can be incredibly soft, bouncy, and healthy!

Using rosemary for your hair:

Simply rub a couple drops of the oil on the small brush or comb, and gently start dabbing the roots and follicles of your hair, combing just a teeny tiny bit up along your hair strands. Once you've got pretty much all of the base of your hairs covered, leave it on for about 3 minutes. Take a bristle brush next and comb from the base of your hairs down to the tips. It won't look like the oil is getting everywhere, but it is! Keep brushing softly and slowly until you've brushed all of your hair. Let it sit for another 3 minutes, and then shampoo and rinse in the shower. You'll notice a gorgeous, shimmering bounce to your hair, and it will smell wonderful too! This technique is especially effective for women with long hair to keep it shining all the way through, as well as help to rid your locks of any difficult tangles or knots.

Using rosemary for your skin:

There are many products available for purchase that use rosemary extracts and essential oils as a main ingredient. This is because rosemary is a natural astringent and antioxidant, making it an effective cleanser and detoxifying agent. To use rosemary to make a face wash is rather simple, all you need is a few drops of rosemary essential oil, a splash of witch hazel, and some sea salt. Mix them together by swishing or swirling in a small bowl, and wash your face with it as you would a normal face wash. Rinse with cool water to get the fullest firming effect, or warm water to get an immediate softening effect.

It's a good idea to keep some rosemary oil on hand for spot treatments, if you find yourself getting split ends or dry skin patches.

Best Natural Cleansers for Dry Skin

Skincare Remedies You Can Find in the Kitchen

Have you tried every cleanser and moisturizing cream on the market for dry skin? Do you want to steer away from commercial skincare products, but aren't sure what will help cleanse your face without stripping it of its natural oils? Look no further than your own kitchen. There are numerous ingredients that will clean your face without drying it out. Try these three natural facial cleansers for dry skin.

Oil cleansing

It might seem like overkill to cleanse dry skin with oil, but oil cleansing is actually beneficial no matter your skin type. Basically, you apply a blend of oils (the blend depends on your personal skin type) to your skin. Then, lay a hot washcloth over your face and seal in the steam with a hand towel. Once the washcloth has cooled, use it to wipe your face. Repeat this process one or two more times. There should be a thin layer of oil remaining afterward, so there is no need to apply a heavy skin cream to moisturize. Read this blog post to learn more about oil cleansing.

Honey scrub

Honey is a wonderful non-drying cleanser that can be found in most kitchens. Use it to wash your face like you would any commercial product: Rub it into damp skin, massaging lightly, and rinse it off. To get rid of any flakiness on your face (or anywhere on your body), create a honey and sugar scrub by mixing the two ingredients together until you have reached the desired consistency. Use a circular motion to massage the scrub into your skin and rinse. I love how soft my skin feels afterward--while the honey moisturizes, the sugar will slough away dryness to reveal a new layer of soft skin.

Avocado mask

For an extra moisturizing boost, apply a hydrating face mask using ingredients you can find in the kitchen. Avocado is particularly beneficial to dry skin. Mash a ripe avocado and apply it to your damp skin. Allow it to work its magic for approximately fifteen minutes before rinsing the mask off. Don't have an avocado immediately available? Try mashing a banana instead, or apply a mask of a beaten egg yolk to cleanse and hydrate a dry face.

You shouldn't have to apply a thick layer of moisturizing cream every night after cleansing your skin, simply to keep it from drying out. Cleanse dry skin with warm--not hot--water and one of the previously discussed home remedies that you might find in the kitchen.

Product Review: Olay Deep Cleansing Face Wash with Witch Hazel for Oily/Combination Skin

Remember being a teenager, and having all those skin problems. I thought I had outgrown them, as during my later teens and into my twentieth year, my skin was really very clear. Then, I got pregnant. Holy crap! I had no idea my skin could produce so much oil! Although the pregnancy ended, my skin did clear, it has never had the very pretty tone and acne-free aspect that it did during my late teens. However, now that I am in my thirties, I am not only dealing with acne and pores that are bigger than the last house I rented, I am now dealing "fine" lines and the beginnings of wrinkles. Thank God, for the genetic gift of not looking as old as I am that my wonderful parents passed to me. However, I have really needed to find a facial cleanser that helped address the large pores, the acne issues and the fine lines in order to help Mother Nature in these areas.

Several months ago, a friend of mine told me about Olay Deep Cleansing Face Wash with witch hazel for skin that is oily or combination-type. Since I was at a point where I could no longer afford to get the nice, expensive anti-aging products that I had been using, this product sounded good, since my best friend pointed out that it was only around six dollars, and it did not take too much cleanser to do a thorough job on her face. She had bought a bottle and kept it for several months. Well, I thought that was definitely worth a shot.

I went to the local Wal-Mart, and they did not carry it. On my next trip to the next town, I went to that Wal-Mart, and they did have it, so I purchased the seven fluid ounce tube that comes in the convenient container that has the lid at the bottom, so you do not have to constantly shake it to get your cleanser to the opening. I spent $6.47 before taxes.

I followed the directions and wet my face. I do this with warm water to open the pores for cleaning. Heeding my friend's advice, I did not put a lot of the cleanser which has a thick consistency and a pearly sheen. It was about the size of a dime, as the directions advise. I added a little water to my hands, rubbed my fingers together and began to rub it into my facial and neck skin. I found this cleanser to be a lot more gentle to my skin than I expected, since it contained witch hazel. I began using it to remove my make-up at night, and I would use it during my morning shower.

Being cheap, I had bought witch hazel to use as an facial astringent before, and wow, did that so not work out for me. I keep some witch hazel handy, since it does have good properties for helping with swelling, bruising, acne, eczema, hemorrhoids, and many other unpleasant conditions (en.wikipedia.org). However, since Olay has such a good reputation for skin products, I was willing to take a chance.

I do understand that it can take several weeks for a product to show real results, so I was ready to be patient, but unlike most facial cleansers, this one actually started working within the first few days. My skin was much clearer, but it was not drying it, too much. My pores started getting quite a bit less noticeable, and the blackheads are a lot better. I have been using this product for months, and I did at one point try to go to a cheaper cleanser, and my skin very angrily retaliated with a nasty bunch of acne until I started using the Olay product again.

My skin is far from perfect, but it has improved greatly, since I have been using this product. I would highly recommend it. Also, the fine lines and wrinkles have gotten much less noticeable. My younger sister is a cosmetologist, and I was asking her about things for age lines. She looked at me, and said, "Why do you need to know?" with genuine bewilderment. I told her that I had been noticing lines on my forehead and around my eyes. She looked very closely, and said that she could barely see any lines.

Now that it is winter, my skin does have more of a tendency to get a little dry, but I simply put some inexpensive aloe vera gel on it to keep from having flaky skin and getting the breakouts that oily lotions cause. All in all, I would give this product four out of five stars. It does not produce miracles, but what does? However, it does help with the acne, blackheads, large pores and age lines. This is with the added bonus of not costing a fortune and lasting for a few months per tube.

For those interested in trying it, you can purchase it at some local stores like Wal-Mart. The good news is that I just found it on Walmart.com for $9.36 for a two-pack with shipping to your home for less than a dollar. Nice! I hope this product review is helpful, and I hope if you try this Olay Deep Cleansing Face Wash with Witch Hazel for Combination/Oily Skin .

Why the Health Benefits of Olive Oil Isn't Getting Credit in America

Despite it Being Old News, the Media Now Reports Olive Oil's Benefits on Lowering Cholesterol

It always amazes me when healthy foods (or oils) consumed by long-living people for centuries pass right over the heads of the modern populace. In an article I wrote here on Feb. 20, 2008 about people claiming to live close to 120, I found out one startling thing when researching the ones who truly were close to 120: They all consumed olive oil daily...either by drinking it or using it (by habit) in the foods they consumed. In some parts of the world (namely in Greece, Italy and Spain as part of the Mediterranean Diet)--most people know it's part of tradition in their cuisine and probably explains why you'll find a lot of people in their 90's and 100's roaming happily down European street corners. That is, until young Europeans come to live in America, get hooked on very non-olive oil McDonalds and then develop heart disease.

They may as well join many fellow Americans who may only think of olive oil as being Olive Oyl from Popeye--which, coincidentally is a classic cartoon/comic strip containing references to two of the healthiest things anywhere: Our article subject and...yes, spinach.

Well, in the last year, it's been both Greece and Spain having the trade-off on how much olive oil has been consumed in the world. To contrast that with the United States, those recent studies show approximately 8% of the American populace consume olive oil (probably thanks to the popularity of Olive Garden) compared to leader Italy at 30% (all of whom probably think Olive Garden is "merda" from afar). Maybe America gets some of that from the James Bond wannabes out there who inadvertently place an olive on a miniature plastic sword in their martinis. A lot of people probably just waste the olive--though others eat them out of sheer joy. Right there, they've eaten one of the most nutritious foods around before rotting their liver with the martini.

Let's not be too cynical about America here in an age when people are stuffing themselves with ever-increasing junk that's destroying one artery after another and raising health care costs for everybody. Also in an age when health care is at crisis point in this country, it's more than gratifying to know that production of olives (to be made into oil) is growing here in America each year. It's not huge, but it's a good start. That means that maybe in ten years, people will get easier access to high-quality olive oil and start improving their health. If only a large part of the American population were aware that, in ancient times through the Mediterranean, olive oil was the most sought after product with poetic words written about how magical and healthful it was.

Yes, somehow that all got lost in the shuffle in the new world of America.

The most healthful kind of olive oil and what it does to improve your arteries...

Believe it or not, there really is an International Olive Oil Council. You probably guessed that America has nothing to do with it either in these isolationist times. Why that is isn't known--but it more or less makes shopping for the best olive oil a little riskier here. If you're in Europe, you're guaranteed to get prime quality olive oil, which is generally called appropriately enough: "Extra Virgin Olive Oil." This kind of oil is one of the best tasting in the world (with loads of antioxidants) due to the cold pressing of the olives during production. Keep in mind that it's important all olive oil gets the cold pressing, because heat will change the taste and quality of the oil.

If you buy a bottle of olive oil with the words "Extra Virgin" here in America--you're actually getting something inferior. Yet, companies here can get away with it thanks to the sometimes laughable USDA allowing companies to give ridiculous labels to badly-made olive oil produced in the States. When you see adjectives such as "Fancy" on a bottle of olive oil in an American store--time to make arrangements with your travel agent to go to Italy and smuggle some real-deal olive oil with you back on the plane.

Consider those American labels to be akin to some of the unregulated health products you see in health food stores that claim with a straight face to give you inner peace and tranquility.

Mind you, if you don't care about the quality of the olive oil--it still has more health benefits than you can possibly imagine that should still make you purchase the product. I say buying an inferior version in America is better than none at all. The biggest benefit is that olive oil has monounsaturated fats that fall under the good fats (know your "Good Fats" before proceeding) every living being needs in a balanced diet. And, as I hope you know, getting monounsaturated fats in your diet often helps prevent heart disease in various wondrous ways.

It's at least fortunate that American olive oil producers put the strong selling point on their labels of the extreme health benefits--despite having to legally say that it's "inconclusive evidence." Many studies have been done in recent years that say that the best quality olive oil (the extra virgin variety) helps make a person's arteries have more elasticity that's important to preventing strokes and heart attacks. This applies not only to humans, but (surprisingly) animals, too. So go ahead and give a little piece of the Mediterranean Diet to your beloved family dog or cat by spreading a little olive oil on their usual food.

Olive oil lowering your cholesterol LDL and the mysteries of why that's kept a secret...

Recently, I saw a segment on FoxNews (with the burly Dr. Manny) about how olive oil could potentially lower your "bad" cholesterol also known as your LDL. When I saw the report, I thought to myself: Isn't this something we knew a long time ago? Some of my own family have lowered their cholesterol considerably via the same means. Well, apparently a lot of people don't know that as they should. Here we have one of the most useful edible oils on the planet that's been proven to help a person's health in myriad ways--and it's pretty much only consumed by accident (and too rarely) rather than willfully. Based on the rate of heart disease and obesity in this country, most people obviously don't buy bottles of olive oil or consume foods that have olive oil in it. As I insinuated earlier, even the types of olive oil available in America aren't always of the very best extra virgin quality.

Without wanting to get on a tirade you can't prove about the medical establishment, knowledge about olive oil is likely not getting out there diffusely on purpose. If everybody ended up with healthy arteries and we wiped out heart disease and stroke from America, there wouldn't be any...well, heart surgeons or pharmaceutical drugs needed as badly any longer. Of course, other things can cause the same problems, but it's nine times out of ten related to what we eat over time.

___

Naturally, we can't expect some people to pour a big glass of olive oil and gulp it down every night either in the morning, before going to bed...or during mid-day--if that's the kind of person you are. In earlier centuries, that's exactly what some did if even using olive oil on their face as a proven natural moisturizer. One of the best (or common) ways to get it into your diet is by using it as a dressing on salads. I have a salad almost every night for dinner now using olive oil dressing--and it not only gives you a taste of how Italians eat daily, but also tastes good. There's countless ways to use olive oil on food, so use your imagination if you have a tendency to do culinary experiments when making dinner.

In the meantime, we should all wish that this type of edible oil gets as much attention (and profits) as that other non-edible oil that's causing about as many economic problems for America as a bad diet does...

DIY at Home Hot Oil Treatment for Your Face

When your hair becomes dry and damaged from too much styling and over drying, you solve the problem by giving your locks a hot oil treatment. Soon your hair is soft and luxurious again. But what do you do when your face also has become dry and flaky either from cold winter winds or from too much exposure to the sun? Easy: You make a hot oil treatment for your face to re-moisturize and get back your healthy glow.

There is no need to go to a spa to get a hot oil treatment, or even to buy expensive facial oil at the drug store when you can make your own homemade facial oil simply and easily. All you need is 1 oz of avocado oil, 2 teaspoons of rosehip oil, 2 teaspoons of argan oil, 1 borage oil capsule, 1 vitamin E capsule, 2 drops of neroli oil and 3 drops of sandalwood oil.

Now all your need to do is mix the ingredients to make your facial hot oil treatment. In a small microwave safe bowl, begin by mixing the avocado oil, argan oil and rosehip oil together.

Then, cut open the vitamin E and borage oil capsules. Squeeze the oil out of the capsules into the bowl with the other oils. Mix all ingredients until they are combined well. If the vitamin E oil seems hard to mix in with the others don't worry. Once the mixture is warmed up in the microwave everything will be much easier to combine.

The last ingredients to add are the neroli oil and sandalwood oil.

Once all the ingredients are combined together, put the facial oil mixture into the microwave and heat it up for around twenty seconds. You want it to be warm but not hot enough to be painful on your face, and certainly not hot enough to burn you.

To apply the hot oil face treatment, all you have to do is slowly work a few drops of the oil mixture onto the dry areas on your face with your fingers. Make sure to wash your hands first though so you are not adding any extra dirt to your face.

This recipe makes enough homemade facial oil for around six to eight uses, depending on how dry your skin is. How often you use it depends on your skin type and how prone it is to drying out. Once you see how amazing this hot oil treatment makes your skin look and feel, you are going to want to use it all the time.

Homemade Hot Oil Hair Treatment

Make Your Own Natural and Inexpensive Hair Care Product

Every three months or so, depending on the condition of my hair, I use the following natural homemade hot oil treatment that is similar to the popular store brand: Alberto VO5 Hot Oil Treatment. I use it to condition the ends of my hair. This inexpensive recipe that I am sharing with you below can also be used as a deep conditioning treatment for the entire head and scalp when your hair is dry.

Items Needed for My Homemade Hot Oil Hair Treatment:

Three to four tablespoons of olive oil (I recommend virgin olive oil but regular also works fine)

One pair of rubber gloves (optional - I use my bare hands so I can moisturize them, too)

One small microwave safe bowl

Two or more hair clips (especially if your hair is long)

Three drops of lavender oil (optional)

One tablespoon (to measure the oil and to mix the olive oil and lavender oil together)

One shower cap

Instructions for My Homemade Hot Oil Hair Treatment:

1. This treatment is to be used on clean dry hair. (I usually do this treatment in the evening.)

2. Heat the olive oil in a microwave safe bowl for seventy seconds and remove.

3. Add the three drops of lavender oil and stir. (This will make the scent more pleasurable. Lavender oil is also a well known ingredient used in aroma therapy for relaxation.)

4. Lightly touch the oil with the tip of your finger first to see if you would prefer using gloves when working with this degree of warm oil.

5. Next, apply the oil to the areas of hair that you want to deep condition.

6. Once you have applied the oil, massage it into the hair and scalp using a circular motion.

7. Use hair clips to secure hair in place.

8. Put the shower cap on your head and leave the oil treatment on for twenty to thirty minutes. For severely dry hair, I would recommend using the treatment for forty minutes to reap the full conditioning benefits of the olive oil.

9. After the desired time, remove the shower cap and thoroughly rinse your hair clean with warm water.

10. Towel dry and comb through. Allow to air dry, if possible. It will appear slightly shiny but resist washing it until the next day.

11. The next morning, wash, condition, and style your hair as usual.

Other Variations of My Homemade Hot Oil Hair Treatment:

1. Use a towel that has been saturated with hot water from the tap and wrung out to avoid large messy drips. Apply the hot damp towel to your head instead of the shower cap. Follow the rest of the instructions listed above.

2. Instead of lavender oil, you can use vanilla, patchouli, or sandalwood oil when creating the mixture. You can even use this treatment with two drops of your favorite perfume added to it instead of lavender oil. I would advise you to use a scent that you enjoy smelling to make the experience more pleasurable. After all, this should be a ritual of healing, not torture.

Usage of My Homemade Hot Oil Hair Treatment:

This homemade hot oil hair treatment can be used as frequently as needed. Those who use my homemade hot oil hair treatment, usually do it every two to three months, depending on the condition of their hair.

Head to Toe Beauty with Olive Oil

Olive Oil Beauty and Diet Tips and Tricks

Olive oil has been a staple in not just the Mediterranean diet but the lifestyle as a whole for centuries. Its beneficial qualities are countless along with its uses. On first glance, it just appears to be another cooking oil. For many it might sit on the counter or perhaps the cupboard; waiting to be drizzled on some type of scrumptious food. But it's not just another oil, it's olive oil and it has a lot more uses that just being poured over salads. Sure olive oil tastes fantastic, it's easier on our stomachs, more so than any other oil. It's chock full of anti-oxidants which makes it fantastic for our heart and health. But it comes other bonuses that often go overlooked. It's time to grab that bottle and start realizing there are lot more perks packed inside that bottle than you might have originally thought. From the inside out it can beautify you from head to toe. So lets start at the top and work our way down in our learning journey of the beauty wonders of olive oil.

Our hair can often become lackluster and dull. We wash it stripping away the natural oils. We use hot irons, blow dry it and then add tons of products to get the perfect look. We dye it, strip it and dye it again. After all this we run out and purchase shampoos and conditioners to soften it, calm it and control it. Maybe we toss a hot oil treatment in the cart if we think about it, but there's no need to if you have olive oil in the cupboard. It can bring that silky shine back and keep your locks in check.

Olive oil makes a fantastic hot oil treatment and it's as simple to do. Just carefully heat a couple of tablespoons of olive oil and work it through dry hair. Focus should be on the shaft and ends, not the roots as this is where hair is naturally oily. Wrap hair up in a hot towel, fresh out of the dryer perhaps, and let the oil work some magic for you. Shampoo and rinse well in cool water; style and enjoy soft, shiny hair.

Moving on, and down, remember we're working head to toe, with the list of do it yourself beauty with olive oil is taking care of you skin. What girl doesn't love a good bath scrub? They make our skin soft and glowing but can be costly. Olive oil to the rescue again, making a super scrub at home couldn't be easier. It only takes a couple of items that are probably already stocked in your kitchen and can be made quick and fresh upon demand. First pick an abrasive, think sugar, I like using brown, or epsom salt. Mix half a cup with a few tablespoons of olive oil. You can add a few drops of essential oils for scent or some fresh herbs depending on their beneficial attributes. The possibilities are endless, the results are marvelous. Olive oil will keep your skin moisturized and gorgeous.

Once you're done with your hot oil treatment for your hair and scrubbing down with your fresh new olive oil scrub why not pamper yourself a bit more? How about a manicure and pedicure? And guess what? You can use olive oils benefits here as well. Brush olive oil across your cuticles and then soak your hands and feet in warm water . It will help to soften your cuticles and make them easier to push back, plus it will keep them moisturized so they stay soft afterwards. No more scraggly cuticle for you, plus your manicure and pedicure will stay nicer longer with your cuticles in check.

So we've worked our way from head to toe on just a few of the beauty tricks you can work with olive oil, but there's even more. Use it as a gentle way to remove eye makeup. Swipe a tissue with a few drops across your eyes before washing your face at night for quick results. Add half a cup to a warm bath and let your entire body reap the moisturizing attributes of it. Mix it with sugar for a facial exfoliant, rub it gently in a circular motion and rinse well with cool water for a gentle scrub that will wipe out dead cells and leave you glowing gorgeous. Another little hand and foot softening trick and to apply olive oil to your hands and feet as you would a moisturizer and cover them with cotton gloves or socks. If you get into the habit of doing this a few times a week before bed your hands and feet will be thanking you. Use it on rough elbows and knees, it will absorb quickly and won't leave a greasy feeling behind on your skin.

The list can go on and on and it's no wonder why it's so revered in the Meditteranean lifestyle. Adding a little more olive oil in your life will keep you looking and feeling beautiful from the inside out. So the next time you reach for it on the shelf in the grocery, pick up some extra and add it to your beauty routine for some superb results.

The Benefits of Almond Oil for Your Hair

Almond oil has numerous healthy benefits for your hair. We use almonds in foods, and almond oil as a flavoring. Almond oil is known for health benefits. Although other countries and cultures have recognized the healthy benefits of almond oil for the hair, in this country, we are just finding out how healthy and beneficial almond oil is for hair care and resolving hair problems.

The Basics

The almond tree is native to the Middle East, and is not really a nut at all. It is actually a drupe, a fleshy indehiscent fruit. To extract the almond oil, the process is similar to that of extracting olive oil. There is a large amount of oil in almonds, over 50% oil. The oil has many medical properties, including for the use of hair. Almond oil comes in two types, sweet almond oil and bitter almond oil. It is the sweet almond oil that is used in skin and hair care products. But be advised that if you are allergic to almonds, you could possibly have an allergic reaction if applied to the scalp.

Vitamins, Nutrients and Minerals

Almond oil is a rich source of Vitamin E, Vitamin D and has potassium, magnesium and calcium. Almond oil also contains three essential fats. Mono-unsaturated Oleic Acid is an Omega-9 fat. The almond contains about 78% of this fat. Almond oil also contains Omega-6 oil and Omega-3 essential fatty acids.

Why Almond Oil?

The nutrients in almond oil make it an ideal solution to many hair problems and to maintain healthy hair. The combination of fats and fatty acids in almond oil softens, strengthens and nourishes the hair. Almond oil has been recommended as a hair growth agent for centuries. Almond oil is often used in people who have issues with hair loss or breakage. An almond oil scalp scrub has also been used for hair loss and breakage. With the benefits of Vitamin E and potassium, almond oil helps with hair fall out and breakage as a natural hair loss treatment. In the event of dry scalp, almond oil nourishes and moisturizes the scalp, and removes the flakiness. When hair has breakage, the cuticles are rough and split ends are evident. Almond oil smoothes the hair cuticles, thus giving a healthier appearance to hair.

How To Use Almond Oil in the Hair

To use almond oil or almond oil containing product in the hair is very simple. If you use a hair care product that contains almond oil, follow the instructions on that product.

To use almond oil, pour a few drops into your palm. You may need an extra drop or so if you have longer hair. Dip you fingers in the olive oil that is in your palm. Apply gently to your scalp. Massage into the scalp using circular motion. You will immediately start to see your hair look more shiny and lustrous.

As a scalp scrub, use a little stronger motion when massaging into scalp. Then wash hair after a few hours. The almond oil will remove dry, itchy flakes and dirt as you wash your hair. Then apply a few drops of almond oil to your hair and scalp when dry to maintain the healthy look and reap the full benefits of the almond oil.

All Natural Shaving Oil is Great for Travel

Pacific Shaving Company Makes a Shaving Product That's Small, but Effective for Travel and Even Home Use!

All Natural Shaving Oil, made by Pacific Shaving Company, is a handy travel product. The compact bottle sizes of All Natural Shaving Oil make them easy to pack for travel. It only takes roughly 6-8 drops of All Natural Shaving Oil to get an effective shave during travel or while at home.

For sensitive skin like mine, I found this product to be very effective from the first time application of six drops that I applied on my palm, then rubbed the personal care liquid on my wet face. The smell of this liquid is very very faint, but does have a bit of a flowery odor. This scent is not irritating, unlike shave cream or other whisker-ridding oils that contain more of a perfume scent in them. Pacific's travel product only contains all natural ingredients, including the oils that are made of hybrid sunflower, tangerine peel, grapefruit peel, avocado, and Kukui nut. This must by why the product has a bit of a flowery smell. According to Pacific's website, this natural personal care travel liquid is made by FDA registered chemists.

After I rubbed my face with this whisker remover aid, it seemed as if the substance wasn't even on my face, but I went through with getting rid of my stubble, hoping for the best. And I must say, the razor glided across my face as I shaved. My face felt really smooth, clean, and conditioned after using. My skin didn't have an oily feel to it either, nor did it feel razor-burned.

Another advantage to using All Natural Shaving Oil is that there's less mess to clean up (whether you travel or are at home) since it's not a messy shaving cream. It's economical since it basically takes just 6-8 drops of the oil for your face for each whisker-ridding task. While getting rid of those whiskers, if your face starts to feel dry, you just throw more water on it rather than add more of the agreeable liquid. Also, make sure the razor stays as wet as possible. This technique definitely worked for me.

All Natural Shaving Oil comes in the handy ½ ounce bottle. This is perfect for travel, and good for up to 100 shaves. It costs $6.95. This liquid also comes in the 2 oz. bottle, and is priced at $25.00. This amount is supposed to be good for up to 400 shaves. The 2 oz. bottle is also great for travel since the current TSA regulation limits on liquids are 3 oz. each if it's going into carry-on luggage. My ½ ounce bottle came in a small velvet-colored, draw-string bag, like the kind you'd put marbles in. Other products available from Pacific include RazorMax Classic replaceable razor blades that are compatible with such razors as the Gillette Mach 3 Turbo, Schick Quattro, etc. These blades are designed to give up to 40 quality shaves. See the below website for details. This all natural liquid, which is very compatible with a razor, can be used by both men and women. The personal care travel product is even compatible with electric razors for pre-shave conditioning if so desired!

The company's website, listed below, is very informative, and includes a detailed FAQ link. Pacific's webpage even tells you how to use the personal care oil, and gives a more detailed rundown on the rest of their products. This California-based firm accepts major credit cards, checks, money orders, as well as international orders. They even have a 60 day money back guarantee.

This shaving oil is also available in a variety of stores, especially in many outlets located in California, Washington, and Oregon.
