Sometimes called "bedroom" eyes, hooded eyes have a natural droop in the center of the eyelid. If you were born with these flirty eyes, you may notice that the droop becomes more prominent with age. People with hooded eyes may find wearing flattering eye makeup a challenge. If applied improperly, makeup can actually make the look worse. As a makeup professional, I know a few good cheats that will make your eyes appear wider, more open. Grab your makeup tools and let's go!
Start by pairing your eye color with the right eyeshadow. Put the focus on the color by using complementary eyeshadow shades. Here's a good primer for finding the right shade.
• Blue eyes: brown, copper or gold eyeshadow
• Green eyes: purple, earthy eyeshadow colors
• Brown eyes: any color especially navy, silver or gold
• Hazel eyes: Pick any color!
• Gray eyes: Dark, intense colors are best
Now follow these techniques:
Don't use a highlighter. That makes the eyes look puffier. Instead, use your foundation as a highlighter. Apply foundation to the entire eyelid before you get started.
Only use medium eyeshadow shades on the lower lid. Midtones work best for hooded eyes. If you go too light, you'll highlight the problem. Apply the shadow from the lash line to just above the crease.
Dab a white dot in the arch of your brow. Rub it and blend it in to your skin. If you have dark skin, a touch of concealer, slightly lighter than your skin tone will do perfectly. This creates the illusion of a wider eye.
Curl the eyelashes before you apply mascara. This is a good idea no matter what eye shape you have. It really opens up the eye.
Apply eyeliner to the top lashes only to define the eye. Think Angelina or Elizabeth Taylor! It's a gorgeous effect.
Use shimmer sparingly. Shimmering eyeshadows don't work well on hooded eyes.
Dress up those beautiful hooded eyes with the correct eyeshadow application. It's a great way to make them stand out perfectly.
