Yogurt is one of my favorite dairy products. Not just because it tastes good and comes in many delicious flavors. Yogurt is a great beauty ingredient. It can be mixed with many of the same ingredients used for scrumptious treats but for the body. One of those mixtures I love to make are yogurt smoothies for my face and hair.
Why Yogurt?
Yogurt contains natural milk protein that is good for the hair. This protein helps strengthen hair without making it dull or crunchy. It also is great for dry, sensitive skin. Cold yogurt can be used as a face mask on skin that is sensitive or dry and needs a little cooling relief.
Yogurt Face Smoothie
I have combination skin that sometimes goes through serious bouts of dryness. Sometimes a store-bought hydrating face mask or cold cream can be irritating to it. During those times I whip up a yogurt face smoothie to calm my raging skin.
Ingredients
1 cup of plain yogurt
1 egg white
1 Tbsp of honey
Optional ingredients: Half of a banana mashed, mashed papaya, mashed carrot or half of an avocado mashed.
In a medium-sized mixing bowl add yogurt, egg white and honey together. Mix these together until smooth and even. Add one of the optional ingredients listed and blend until creamy.
1. Smooth mixture over face and neck, avoiding eye and lip area (you might be tempted to eat it).
2. Leave on face for 10 to 15 minutes.
3. Remove with a warm washcloth.
4. Rinse face with lukewarm water.
5. Pat face and neck dry.
6. Apply your moisturizer within 3 minutes of patting face dry to lock in moisture.
Store any unused smoothie in the refrigerator for three to five days.
Yogurt Hair Smoothie
I tend to use a yogurt smoothie on my hair when I am in need a deep conditioner that has some protein in it. Since my hair has low porosity, I don't need a lot of protein as added protein tends to buildup on my hair making it dull and crunchy. My smoothie has enough protein to add strength but not enough to damage my hair.
Ingredients
1 cup of plain yogurt
1 egg yolk
3 Tbsp of extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil
Optional ingredients: Half of mashed banana or avocado.
In a medium mixing bowl add yogurt and banana or avocado if you are using one of the optional ingredients. Mix together then add in egg yolk and oil. Blend together until smooth and creamy in texture.
1. Wash hair as normal.
2. After rinsing, apply all of the smoothie to hair concentrating on ends.
3. Place a plastic cap over head.
4. Leave in for 30 to 45 minutes.
5. Rinse with lukewarm water.
6. Follow with a cool or cold water rinse to seal hair cuticle for shine.
7. Dry and style as usual.
If there is any smoothie leftover, store any unused smoothie in the refrigerator for three to five days.
These two smoothies are lifesavers for me. One thing I like to do is make both smoothies at the same time since they each use different part of the egg. This way I am not wasting an egg. Have you made a yogurt face mask or hair conditioner before? If so, let us know how it went in the comments below.
